Halloween Culture in Canada and How It Differs from Japan

When October arrives, Canadian towns turn a warm shade of orange. Pumpkins fill the stores, and ghosts and skeletons appear on doorsteps and lawns. The whole neighborhood seems to transform into a Halloween wonderland.

In Canada, Halloween is all about “Trick or Treat!”

As the evening comes, children in costumes go door-to-door collecting candy.

A house with its porch light on means “We're giving out treats!”

Neighbors happily prepare big bowls of sweets to welcome the kids.

While Japan has seen more costume events in recent years, in Canada, Halloween is celebrated as a community tradition. It's a time for families and neighbors to connect and share joy together.

Adults also take part enthusiastically. Many workplaces have costume days, and friends host Halloween parties with creative themes. Some families even coordinate their costumes, making it a day full of laughter and fun.

Another highlight is home decoration. Front porches are decorated with carved pumpkins—jack-o’-lanterns—that glow beautifully at night. Many homes also feature spider webs and ghost figures, making every street feel magical.

Schools often host pumpkin carving events where children proudly display their creations. In Japan, home decorations are still uncommon, but in Canada, it's a beloved seasonal family tradition that everyone looks forward to.

Halloween in Canada is a long-cherished tradition that brings families and communities together. It's a warm celebration filled with childrens smiles and the gentle kindness of adults. While Halloween in Japan continues to grow more vibrant each year, the Canadian way of cherishing connection and togetherness offers a special kind of beauty that truly stays in the heart♪
